How to declutter your home without feeling bored or exhausted..

even if you were born with a messy gene!

The common wisdom for creating an organized home is to first discard items you don’t use any more, because then it’s easier to keep everywhere tidy.

It makes logical sense.

If you donate the clothes that are hanging neatly in your closest but never wear, you make space for the clothes you DO wear.

The ones that are currently lying on your bedroom floor or piled on the top of the chest of drawers because there’s no room in the closet.

The problem with this wisdom for ADHDers is that even though you know the theory

(you have read all the books and watched the TV shows),

taking action and actually doing it, is another story.

Why is this?

Making decisions is hard when you have ADHD, even on a good day.

Decluttering and discarding means making a quick succession of decisions.

You need to ask yourself should it stay or should it go…for every single item.

This is mentally uncomfortable and draining.

Also, your ADHD perfectionism makes it harder because you want to make the ‘right’ decision and so you rethink each decision again and again.

How do you motivate yourself to start such an energy draining task?

If you do manage to start, how do you keep going and make progress, rather than abandoning ship half way through…

leaving your space looking worse than when you started?

You might have tried (many times) before and failed.

Unlike other programs that don’t take all the subtleties of ADHD into account.

This solution works because it was created by someone who doesn’t have a neurotypical brain.

Imagine jump starting your decluttering in a way that made sense, felt easy, do-able, energizing and fun.

Decluttering is bigger than just ‘getting rid of things’.

It allows you to create a clear and calm home. One that nurtures you and helps your ADHD symptoms rather than exacerbate them.

Text message from a happy client

Hi,  I am Jacqueline

I am not one of those people who was born with an organization gene.

Far from it.

My default mode is messy.

I have severe dyslexia, which means my brain doesn’t work like most of the world’s population.

This has its challenges, but I like that it works in a similar way to my ADHD clients.

So much so that I get asked almost every day:

"Are you psychic”’
or,
"Are you in my head right now? "

Before I was diagnosed with dyslexia, and before I became an ADHD coach, I found the generally accepted advice about keeping an organized and tidy home didn’t work for me.

At first, I thought something was wrong with me because I just didn’t ‘know’ how to do these things.

I started to read how-to books and was looking for the ONE book that would solve all my organizing and tidying problems.

I didn’t find it, but all that reading didn’t go to waste.

From each book or battered waiting room magazine, there was usually a suggestion or tip that did work.

Over the years I pieced those all together to form my own system.

I am still not a naturally tidy person, but my system makes me look like one :).

It also helps me to feel organized on the inside too.

When I shared this system with my ADHD clients, it worked for them too.

So, I gave it the name Clear and Calm because a clear physical environment creates a calm internal environment.
